Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Sanctuary

The footsteps stopped right outside the velvet curtain,
and a sharp,
mocking laugh echoed through the grand room.
Ivy turned sharply,
her eyes narrowing as she saw a woman step into the private sanctuary.
The stranger was incredibly beautiful,
with long,
cascading dark hair and piercing,
malicious green eyes.
She was wearing a deep crimson silk dress that clung to her curves,
a color that felt like an open provocation in a bridal boutique.
Behind her stood Kane,
the man Ivy was supposed to marry in less than a week.
He looked completely different today,
his usual warm expression replaced by a cold,
impassioned indifference.
He did not look at Ivy's face,
instead,
his gaze remained fixed on the dark-haired woman by his side.
"Kane,"
Ivy whispered,
her voice trembling slightly as she looked at her fiancé,
"what is the meaning of this?"
"Who is she,
and why is my wedding dress missing from the hanger?"
The dark-haired woman stepped forward,
her high heels clicking loudly against the polished marble floor.
"Your dress?"
she mocked,
her lips curling into a cruel,
derisive smile.
"It belongs to someone who actually deserves to wear it now,
little bird."
"Kane has realized that a weak,
nameless stray like you could never be the Luna of the Crimson pack."
Ivy felt as though all the air had been violently kicked out of her lungs,
her mind spinning as she stared at the man she loved.
"Kane,
tell me she is lying,"
Ivy pleaded,
stepping toward him,
her hands reaching out instinctively.
But Kane merely stepped back,
allowing the dark-haired woman to occupy the space between them.
"She isn't lying,
Ivy,"
Kane said,
his voice completely devoid of any emotion,
like a stranger reading a text.
"This is Scarlett,
the true daughter of the dominant bloodline of the southern plains."
"The elders have decided,
and my heart has followed their wise counsel."
"Our engagement was a business arrangement,
one that no longer serves the interests of my people."
Ivy stood frozen,
the painful words cutting deeper than any physical blade ever could.
She looked at the man who had promised to protect her,
who had whispered sweet oaths under the moonlight.
Now,
he was standing beside another woman,
watching Ivy's world shatter without a single hint of regret.
Scarlett laughed again,
a sound that was pure poison,
enjoying every second of Ivy's agonizing despair.
"Look at her,
Kane,"
Scarlett whispered,
running her manicured fingers down his black suit jacket.
"She looks so pathetic,
so utterly broken."
"Did she honestly believe that a nobody could ever sit on the throne beside you?"
Ivy's sorrow quickly began to turn into something else,
a spark of hot,
furious anger igniting within her chest.
Her inner wolf,
though quieted by months of submission,
began to growl fiercely in her soul.
She was not a nobody,
and she would not allow herself to be humiliated in this vile manner.
"You think you can just cast me aside like trash?"
Ivy said,
her voice growing stronger,
her blue eyes flashing with dangerous light.
"We signed a treaty,
Kane,
our packs agreed to this union."
Kane finally looked her in the eyes,
but there was only a chilling,
deadly emptiness inside them.
"Treaties can be rewritten,
Ivy,"
he replied coldly,
crossing his arms over his chest.
"And weak links must always be eliminated for the survival of the pack."
Scarlett stepped even closer to Ivy,
her scent filling the air,
an aggressive,
dominant pheromone meant to force submission.
"You need to leave this city immediately,"
Scarlett hissed,
her eyes flashing with her own inner wolf's malice.
"But before you go,
May you like
you will formally surrender everything Kane ever gave you."
"Including the dignity you think you possess."
