Chapter 5 - A Cry into the Void

The call connected with a soft,
almost imperceptible beep that only a wolf's sharp ears could detect.
Ivy did not wait for a greeting,
knowing that every single second was precious now.
"Mom,
come get me!"
Ivy screamed at the top of her lungs,
her voice filled with raw,
unfiltered terror and desperation.
"They're beating me,
she wants to strip me!"
The entire boutique went completely silent for a moment,
the guards pausing in their assault as they realized she was speaking into a hidden device.
Scarlett frowned,
her eyes quickly scanning Ivy's torn clothing until she spotted the faint glow coming from the pocket.
"What is that?"
Scarlett demanded,
reaching down with her good hand to violently rip the phone away from Ivy.
She held the device up to her ear,
her expression turning into one of pure,
arrogant amusement as she heard a frantic voice on the line.
"Who did this?"
the voice from the phone demanded,
a deep,
melodious tone that somehow made the temperature in the room drop instantly.
Even through the tiny speaker,
the voice carried an eerie,
subterranean power that made Kane stiffen slightly where he stood.
But Scarlett was too blinded by her own perceived power to notice the subtle shift in the air.
"Me,"
Scarlett answered into the phone,
her voice dripping with supreme arrogance and condescension.
"Your pathetic daughter has been running her mouth like she's got a big name behind her."
"Someone had to finally teach her what she actually is,
a worthless piece of trash."
On the other end of the line,
there was a brief,
terrifying silence,
the kind of quiet that precedes a cataclysmic earthquake.
Then,
the voice spoke again,
each word delivered with a cold,
surgical precision that cut through the air.
"I don't care who you think you are,"
Ivy's mother said,
her tone so calm it was absolutely chilling.
"Let go of my daughter immediately,
or you will regret it the exact second I get there."
Scarlett burst into a loud,
hysterical laugh,
mocking the serious warning without a single care in the world.
"Come find me then,
you old hag,"
Scarlett spat back,
her eyes flashing with malicious glee.
"I'll be right here waiting for you at Lumi Bridal."
"In fact,
when you arrive,
I'll skin you alive myself and see what color you bleed."
Ivy looked up,
her heart sinking as she heard Scarlett's insane,
suicidal provocations.
She knew her mother,
and she knew that Scarlett had just signed her own execution warrant in blood.
Kane stepped forward,
a sudden look of unease washing over his handsome face as he looked at the phone.
"Scarlett,
hang up the phone,"
he muttered,
an instinctual fear beginning to awaken deep within his Alpha soul.
"We don't know who her family really is,
we shouldn't complicate this further."
But Scarlett completely ignored him,
intent on enjoying her complete dominance over Ivy and her unseen mother.
"Goodbye,
old woman,"
Scarlett whispered,
before violently throwing the phone onto the hard floor.
With a sharp click of her heel,
she stomped directly onto the screen,
shattering the device into a hundred pieces.

The line died instantly,
leaving only the sound of Ivy's ragged breathing in the large room.
