Chapter 14 - The Unseen Shadow

Back in the federal penitentiary north of Houston,

Daniel Morales sat on the edge of his steel bunk staring at the grey concrete wall.

The hum of fluorescent lights overhead buzzed like an angry insect in his ears.

He replayed the past year in his mind over and over again,

searching for the exact moment his carefully constructed life had slipped through his fingers.

Was it the day he hired Clare Bennett as his assistant?

Or was it the moment he decided that twelve million dollars from the corporate treasury could buy him a second life without consequences?

He had believed he was untouchable.

He had believed his charm,

his title,

and his masculine authority would shield him from any reckoning.

Instead,

he was stripped of his wealth,

his status,

his freedom,

and his family.

A heavy metallic clang echoed down the cell block as a guard struck a nightstick against the iron bars during evening headcount.

Daniel flinched instinctively,

burying his face in his calloused hands.

He knew Valentina was ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange today.

He had seen her face flashed across the prison television screen in the common room,

radiant,

powerful,

and completely triumphant.

She had not just survived his betrayal.

She had weaponized it,

consumed it,

and risen far higher than he had ever allowed her to climb while he was holding her back.

The cell door remained locked.

The silence of his confinement closed in around him like a physical weight.

There were no board meetings to manipulate.

May you like

There were no shell companies to hide behind.

There was only the crushing realization that his own arrogance had been his ultimate executioner.
