Chapter 3 - The Boy in the North Dallas Garden

By noon,

Marcus Vance and I were sitting in an unmarked sedan parked across the street from a manicured preschool in North Dallas.

The morning sun glinted off the wrought-iron gates as parents dropped off their children.

I held a manila folder containing the school directory and custody notes.

At exactly twelve-fifteen,

a sleek black SUV pulled up to the curb.

Clare Bennett stepped out of the driver's seat,

her heels clicking sharply against the pavement.

She wore a cream cashmere sweater and tailored trousers,

looking every bit the picture of suburban respectability.

She opened the rear door and unbuckled a little boy with bright blue eyes and dark,

unruly hair that fell across his forehead.

Daniel's hair.

Daniel's exact nose and jawline.

Leo Bennett.

Or rather,

Leo Morales,

if the secret birth certificate Marcus had pulled from a sealed county archive an hour earlier was correct.

I felt a sharp,

suffocating pain in my chest.

For nine years,

Daniel had insisted we wait on starting a family.

He had claimed the company needed our undivided attention.

He had talked about market volatility,

cash flow constraints,

and the immense pressure of building an empire from scratch.

He had looked into my eyes with manufactured regret and told me that bringing a child into our chaotic startup life would be irresponsible.

While I was flying across the country closing multi-million-dollar supply contracts to secure our financial future,

Daniel was building another family across town.

He was funding a luxury lifestyle,

a sprawling home,

and a secret domestic existence with Clare and their son using our corporate treasury.

Marcus glanced sideways at me,

his expression unreadable behind tinted sunglasses.

“You want to confront them now?”

“No,

” I whispered,

gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white.

“Confrontation is for amateurs.”

“We strike when the legal net is completely closed.”

“What is our next move?”

Marcus tapped a thick legal brief against his knee.

“We secure an ex parte asset freeze on all of Daniel and Clare's personal and corporate accounts by tomorrow morning.”

“We lock down every single property,

vehicle,

and investment portfolio they own.”

“And we notify the federal authorities regarding the wire fraud involving the twelve million.”

“Make sure the freeze includes the trust fund set up for the child,

” I added,

my voice devoid of mercy.

“Every single dime that originated from Meridian must be accounted for and returned.”

Marcus nodded slowly,

a thin smile playing at the corner of his mouth.

“It will be done,

Valentina.”

“By tomorrow afternoon,

your husband won't even be able to buy a cup of coffee with his own credit card.”

I watched as Clare knelt down to kiss her son before leading him through the school gates.

She looked happy.

She looked secure in the stolen empire she and Daniel had erected on the backs of my sleepless nights.

Enjoy it while it lasts,

Clare,

May you like

I thought to myself.

The foundation you built your life upon is about to collapse into dust.
