Chapter 5 - The Freezing of the Empire
The board meeting dissolved into chaotic pandemonium within minutes.
Arthur Pendelton moved immediately to suspend Daniel Morales from his duties as Chief Executive Officer pending an independent internal investigation.
The other two directors seconded the motion without hesitation.
They understood the severity of federal wire fraud and the catastrophic liability the company would face if they attempted to cover up the embezzlement.
Daniel stood up abruptly,
knocking his leather chair backward onto the carpet with a dull thud.
“You cannot do this!”
he roared,
pointing a trembling finger at Arthur.
“I built this company from a two-man garage operation!”
“Meridian is mine!”
“Meridian belongs to its shareholders,
Daniel,
” Arthur replied with icy dignity,
refusing to back down.
“And right now,
as the largest individual shareholder and co-founder,
Valentina holds the legal authority to protect its assets.”
“You are locked out of the network,
your corporate credit cards are deactivated,
and security is escorting you off the premises right now.”
Two massive security guards in black suits stepped silently into the conference room,
flanking Daniel on either side.
Daniel looked at me,
his eyes burning with a mixture of furious betrayal and desperate pleading.
“Valentina,
” he whispered,
his voice cracking slightly as the guards gripped his arms.
“Please.”
“Don't do this to us.”
“Us ended the moment you decided to build another family with my money,
Daniel,
” I said softly,
never breaking eye contact.
“Get him out of my sight.”
They marched him out of the room,
his expensive leather shoes scraping uselessly against the floor.
As the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind him,
the silence in the conference room returned,
heavy and profound.
Arthur leaned back in his chair and let out a long,
weary breath.
“Well,
Valentina.”
“What happens next?”
“What happens next is that we restructure the executive leadership,
” I said,
taking my seat at the head of the table.
“We cooperate fully with federal investigators,
recover every stolen dollar,
and ensure that Meridian emerges from this scandal stronger and cleaner than ever before.”
“And what about you?”
asked Sarah Jenkins,
the board's legal counsel.
“Can you handle stepping into the CEO role while managing the fallout of a very public divorce?”
I looked around the table at the faces of the people who had trusted me for a decade.
“I built this company from the ground up,
Sarah,
” I answered firmly.
