Chapter 8 - The Descent of Federal Marshals

The morning sun broke over downtown Dallas with blinding clarity,

painting the glass skyscrapers in brilliant shades of gold and amber.

By eight-thirty AM,

Marcus Vance and I were standing in the private conference room of the U.S.

Attorney’s office on Commerce Street.

Across the polished oak table sat Assistant U.S.

Attorney Thomas Sterling,

a veteran federal prosecutor known for taking down corporate white-collar criminals without mercy.

He reviewed the contents of the silver flash drive Clare had given me the night before.

For nearly twenty minutes,

the room was completely silent except for the faint scratching of a pen and the hum of the overhead ventilation.

Finally,

Sterling closed the laptop lid,

leaned back in his leather chair,

and looked directly at me.

“This is an airtight case,

Mrs.

Morales,

” Sterling said,

his tone reflecting grim professional satisfaction.

“The audio recordings of your husband discussing the shell company transfers,

combined with the forensic audit and the Cayman Island routing numbers,

give us more than enough to secure a multi-count indictment for wire fraud,

money laundering,

and conspiracy.”

“And what about Clare Bennett?”

Marcus asked,

leaning forward.

“She cooperated voluntarily and provided the primary encryption keys to the offshore accounts.”

“She is willing to testify as a cooperating witness in exchange for a reduced sentencing recommendation.”

Sterling nodded slowly,

tapping his pen against his chin.

“We can offer her a plea deal with substantial leniency,

provided she turns over every remaining asset and testifies fully against Daniel.”

“She takes the deal,

” I said firmly.

“I want Daniel stripped of every single cent,

every share of Meridian stock,

and every illusion of power he possesses.”

“When do we move?”

Sterling checked his Rolex watch and stood up.

“Right now.”

“Federal marshals are currently executing an arrest warrant at his downtown penthouse.”

“And another team is freezing his remaining personal accounts at Texas First National.”

“Would you like to be present when he is brought in?”

I stood up,

buttoned my tailored blazer,

and adjusted my cuffs with absolute composure.

“No,

Thomas.”

“I have a board meeting to run.”

“Let the justice system handle the man who thought he could build an empire on betrayal.”
