Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Golden Boy

The news broke on the financial tickers by noon.

DANIEL MORALES,

CEO OF MERIDIAN AUTOMATION SYSTEMS,

INDICTED ON FEDERAL FRAUD CHARGES.

The media firestorm was immediate and ferocious.

Financial news networks broadcasted live helicopter footage of federal agents leading Daniel out of his luxury penthouse in handcuffs,

his face shielded by a dark winter coat.

The golden boy of Texas manufacturing,

the cover star of business magazines,

was now just another disgraced executive perp-walking toward a federal holding vehicle.

Inside the executive board room at Meridian,

the atmosphere was electric with renewed focus.

The independent board members had unanimously voted to appoint me as the permanent Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.

The emergency restructuring was complete.

All ties to Daniel’s offshore entities had been legally severed,

and the company’s legal counsel had issued a public statement condemning his rogue actions and pledging full transparency with federal regulators.

My phone buzzed incessantly on the mahogany table.

Journalists,

venture capitalists,

major suppliers,

and distant acquaintances all scrambling for a statement.

I ignored every single call.

Arthur Pendelton walked into the boardroom carrying a fresh cup of black coffee and placed a thick portfolio in front of me.

“The morning trading session just closed,

Valentina,

” Arthur said with a rare,

approving smile.

“Initial market panic lasted about twenty minutes when the indictment dropped.”

“But once our institutional investors saw that you were firmly at the helm and that the embezzled funds were already targeted for recovery under federal asset forfeiture laws,

the stock rebounded by four percent.”

“The market trusts competence,

Arthur,

” I replied,

opening the portfolio.

“And it smells blood in the water when corruption is excised.”

“What about Daniel's legal team?”

“They’ve already filed for bail,

but Judge Harrison denied it due to extreme flight risk given his offshore Cayman connections,

” Arthur chuckled softly.

“He’s currently sitting in a federal holding cell on Stemmons Freeway,

wondering how his entire world evaporated in less than seventy-two hours.”

“Let him wonder,

” I said calmly,

signing the first batch of new vendor contracts.

“He spent nine years plotting behind my back.”

“He has plenty of time now to contemplate the consequences of his ambition.”
