Chapter 2 - THE FALLOUT OF LIES

The whispers grew louder,
Like a swarm of bees in the rafters of the cathedral,
Everyone was recording,
Phones held high,
Documenting the downfall of the perfect bride,
Elena’s mother rushed forward,
Her face contorted with fury,
"What is this nonsense?"
She demanded,
Her eyes scanning the crowd for a scapegoat,
She looked at Mia,
"You brat!"
She hissed,
"What have you done?"
Alexander stepped between the woman and the little girl,
"Do not touch her,"
He warned,
His voice was low,
Dangerous,
He was a man who had been pushed past his breaking point,
The mother recoiled,
She had never seen Alexander like this,
Usually,
He was the polite, reserved businessman,
But today,
He was a force of nature,
"Alexander, you are overreacting,"
The mother pleaded,
"It’s just a misunderstanding,
A little prank gone wrong,"
"A prank?"
Alexander turned to her,
His gaze searing,
"She framed Sarah for theft,
She intended to have her arrested,
Ruined,
Perhaps even jailed,"
He stepped closer,
"That is not a prank,
That is a crime,"
He turned back to Sarah,
"You,
Are you hurt?"
Sarah wiped her eyes,
She looked at the floor,
"I am just... confused, sir,"
She whispered,
"I have worked here for years,
I have been loyal,"
She looked at Elena,
"Why?"
Elena stood there,
She wasn't crying anymore,
She was calculating,
Her eyes darted around,
Looking for a way out,
But the exits were blocked by guests,
The news of the scandal was spreading,
Already,
Notifications were pinging on phones throughout the room,
Twitter,
Facebook,
The internet was eating this alive,
The bride,
The thief,
The fake,
It was a headline writer’s dream,
"I had my reasons,"
Elena said,
Her voice was cold now,
Hard,
"You don't understand the pressure,"
"I understand integrity,"
Alexander retorted,
He took a step toward the altar,
He looked at the priest,
Who was standing awkwardly,
Holding his prayer book,
"Father,"
Alexander said,
"I believe the ceremony is over,"
The priest nodded slowly,
"I suppose it is,"
The crowd began to move,
A mass exodus of people eager to escape the suffocating tension,
Some looked at Elena with pity,
But most looked with disgust,
She had been the golden girl of the season,
And now,
She was radioactive,
The bridesmaids,
Dressed in expensive silk,
Whispered among themselves,
Moving away from Elena as if she carried a contagion,
Elena stood alone,
In the center of the aisle,
The cathedral was vast,
Emptying out,
The flowers,
The decorations,
The thousands of dollars spent on perfection,
All of it felt like a funeral arrangement,
She looked at her hands,
The diamond ring was gone,
The life she had built on lies was crumbling,
She turned to look for her father,
But he was already at the door,
Talking frantically into his phone,
His face pale,
He wouldn't look at her,
He knew,
The business,
The reputation,
It was all tied to this marriage,
And now,
It was ashes,
Sarah stood up,
She smoothed her uniform,
She looked at Alexander one last time,
"I will be going, sir,"
She said,
"I don't think I can work here anymore,"
Alexander sighed,
"I understand,"
He reached into his pocket,
He pulled out a thick envelope,
He handed it to her,
"This is for your trouble,
And for the years of service,"
Sarah hesitated,
Then took it,
She walked past Elena,
She didn't look at her,
She didn't offer a spiteful word,
She simply walked with dignity,
And in that moment,
Elena felt the true weight of her loss,
She hadn't just lost the groom,
May you like
She had lost her humanity,
And the world was watching her fall.
