Chapter 7 - THE SHADOW OF DOUBT

The investigation was moving quickly,
John,
The investigator,
Called Alexander early the next morning,
"I found something,"
He said,
His voice was grim,
"It's not just the necklace,
Elena has been involved in several other incidents,"
"Go on,"
Alexander said,
He was sitting at his kitchen table,
Coffee in hand,
"She had a pattern,
She would hire staff,
Find a way to accuse them of theft or misconduct,
Then threaten them with legal action unless they signed NDAs,
She was using them to keep secrets,
Secrets about her family,
About her business dealings,"
Alexander listened,
His face hardening with every word,
"It wasn't just a prank,"
John continued,
"It was a systematic silencing of anyone who got too close to the truth,"
"How many?"
Alexander asked,
"At least five,
Maybe more,"
"My God,"
Alexander whispered,
He felt sick,
He had been so close,
He had been so oblivious,
"What do I do, John?"
"We have enough to go to the police,
But it will be a media firestorm,"
"Do it,"
Alexander said,
"I want her to face justice,
I want those people to be vindicated,"
"Understood,"
John hung up,
Alexander stared at the phone,
He felt a wave of anger,
Not just at Elena,
But at himself,
He had been the one who brought these people into his home,
He had been the one who trusted her,
He stood up,
He paced the room,
The house felt like a prison,
He needed to get out,
He needed fresh air,
He grabbed his coat,
He walked outside,
The morning sun was bright,
The birds were singing,
It was a beautiful day,
And it was a stark contrast to the darkness he felt inside,
He drove to the park,
He walked along the path,
He saw families,
Children playing,
People living their lives,
He envied them,
Their simplicity,
Their honesty,
He saw a woman sitting on a bench,
She was reading a book,
She looked peaceful,
He stopped,
He didn't know why,
He just wanted to be near someone who wasn't hiding a secret,
He sat down on the other end of the bench,
He didn't speak,
He just sat,
He watched the people go by,
He breathed in the air,
He needed this,
He needed to remember what normal felt like,
He felt a little bit lighter,
The weight was still there,
But it was manageable,
He knew he had a long road ahead of him,
But he was ready,
He was ready to face the truth,
No matter how ugly it was,
Because he knew,
That on the other side,
May you like
There was a life worth living,
And he was going to find it.
