Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The pristine, white quartz countertops of the Taylor family’s suburban home in New Jersey usually reflected nothing but perfect luxury.
But tonight, they reflected pure terror.
Fourteen-year-old Lily stood trembling near the kitchen island, her hands gripping the edge so tightly her knuckles turned white, her small frame dwarfed by the cold architecture.
Across from her stood Evelyn, her stepmother—a woman whose flawless elegance in public completely vanished behind closed doors, replaced by a cold, venomous malice that chilled the room.
Evelyn's silhouette, captured by the sharp overhead lights, cast a distorted, predatory shadow across the floor, contrasting sharply with the opulent surroundings.
"You worthless little brat," Evelyn hissed, her voice a sharp whisper that cut through the quiet house like a surgeon's scalpel.
She held up a ruined designer silk dress, a faint water stain barely visible on the exquisite fabric, though she treated it like a fatal flaw.
"I told you to stay out of my closet. You did this on purpose."
"I didn't, Evelyn, I swear!" Lily cried, tears streaming down her pale face, reflecting the panic in her chest.
"I was just putting away the laundry like you asked! The iron must have leaked—"
"Don't you dare lie to me!"
Evelyn’s face contorted with rage, revealing the monster that only Lily knew.
In a sudden, explosive movement, she reached out and violently grabbed Lily by the shoulder, shoving her backward with immense force.
Lily gasped as her feet slipped on the slick hardwood floor, losing all purchase.
She crashed heavily against the counter, her weight knocking over a heavy glass vase filled with fresh lilies, their scent now mingling with fear.
The world seemed to move in slow motion as the heavy object toppled.
The vase shattered against the floor in a loud, violent explosion of shards and water, the sound echoing in the empty, silent house.
Lily collapsed into the middle of the mess, gasping for air as a sharp, blinding pain shot through her left arm, radiating to her chest.
Looking down, she saw a jagged piece of glass had sliced deep into her forearm, revealing the delicate layers beneath.
Crimson blood quickly began to pool, mixing with the spilled water and crushed white petals on the floor, a macabre canvas.
The scene, captured from a low angle, highlighted the raw horror: the broken vase, the petals soaked in water and crimson, and Lily’s hand, slashed and bleeding against the cold quartz environment that was supposed to be safe.
Instead of showing horror or regret, Evelyn merely stepped back to protect her expensive designer shoes from the bloody water.
She leaned down, her eyes narrowing into cruel slits as she looked at the bleeding teenager.
"Clean this up before your father gets home from his business trip tomorrow," Evelyn whispered, her voice dripping with venomous warning.
"If you breathe a single word of this to Mark, I will make sure you never see the light of day again. Do you understand me?"
Lily huddled on the floor, clutching her bleeding arm to her chest, sobbing silently as the heavy, deliberate footsteps of her tormentor faded down the hallway.
The physical pain was immense, but the silence and isolation were worse.
The nightmare had only just begun.
Every moment of cleanup was a fresh agony, wiping away evidence while her own blood still flowed.
The memory of that evening, now a searing image, etched itself into her mind.
May you like
Lily was alone.
And in that opulent house, surrounded by luxury, there was no one to hear her scream.
