Chapter 9 - The Unraveling

Evelyn stood there, her mask of perfection completely shattered.
She had expected to find Lily alone, perhaps snooping, but finding Mark there, holding the proof of her crimes, was her worst nightmare.
"Mark! I can explain—" she began, her voice cracking.
"Can you, Evelyn?" Mark asked, his voice low, dangerous. "Can you explain Elara Thorne? The Cayman accounts? Grandmother’s necklace?"
"It’s not what you think!"
"What is it then? I’ve been auditing our accounts. The missing money, the unexplained transfers..."
He held up the statements. "It all points to you."
Evelyn looked around, trapped.
She saw Lily standing behind Mark, and her fear instantly twisted into rage.
"This is your fault! You meddling little—"
She lunged for Lily, her hands clawing.
"No!" Mark shouted, stepping in front of his daughter, physically blocking Evelyn.
"Get back!"
He grabbed Evelyn by the shoulders, much like she had done to Lily, but with the controlled strength of a man defending his child.
"Don't you touch her."
Evelyn recoiled, her face contorted in an ugly, raw grimace of hatred and defeat.
The dynamic of power had officially shifted.
Mark looked at his wife, seeing her clearly for the first time in their entire marriage.
"It’s over, Evelyn. I’m calling the police. And the lawyers."
The finality in his voice was absolute.
Evelyn collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the floor, her eyes hollow, the predator finally defanged.

Lily stood by the door, watching, the ghost of the kitchen shattering playing in her mind.
The trauma was real, but the nightmare was ending.
