Chapter 5 - A Fracture in the Facade

Life resumed its tense rhythm, but the pressure was building.
Mark began to grow suspicious of Evelyn’s extreme protectiveness over the household accounts.
He would ask about expenses, and she would dismiss him with vague, playful deflection.
"Oh, darling, don't worry about the boring details. You focus on the big picture."
But Mark, while emotionally blind to his daughter, was not blind to finances.
He started looking closer.
At the same time, Lily found a small respite.
She began spending hours in the library, losing herself in books.
It was the only room where Evelyn rarely ventured.
One evening, while Mark was in the study reviewing bank statements, Evelyn cornered Lily in the kitchen again.
She was agitated.
The merger had been finalized, and now the audit was beginning.
"Your father is asking questions, Lily. Questions I don't appreciate."
Lily, emboldened by her secret refuge, retorted, "Maybe he's smart to ask."
Evelyn stopped.
For the first time, she looked rattled, not just angry.
"You watch your tone."
The moment was brief, a crack in the armor.
Lily realized that her stepmother was not invincible.
This realization sparked a faint ember of defiance in Lily’s chest.
She looked at her scarred arm and felt a strange new sensation.
It wasn't just pain; it was evidence.
If Evelyn could be scared, then Evelyn could be defeated.
But how?
The game was dangerous, and Lily knew she had to wait for the right moment.
She began observing her stepmother more closely, noting the subtle inconsistencies, the nervous glances when the phone rang, the possessiveness over the mail.

Now, she had observation.
