Chapter 6 - Whispers and Disappearances

Mark’s audit continued, and his behavior changed.

He became withdrawn, less focused on work and more focused on the ledger.

He started working from home more often, which irritated Evelyn immensely.

Lily watched as the dynamic shifted.

The house, usually loud with Evelyn’s demands, became strangely quiet, filled only with the rhythmic sound of Mark’s fingers typing in his office.

One evening, while clearing the dinner table, Lily noticed that a valuable antique necklace, a Taylor family heirloom, was missing from its usual spot in the display case.

She mentioned it casually.

"Dad, did you move Grandmother’s necklace?"

Mark looked up, his brow furrowing. "No. Why?"

Evelyn immediately interjected, "Oh, I took it to be cleaned! It was looking a bit dull."

Her explanation was smooth, too quick.

Lily saw the flash of panic in her stepmother's eyes before it was masked.

She knew Evelyn was lying.

But where was the necklace?

Later that week, two more small, expensive items disappeared.

A gold watch from Mark's collection and a set of rare pearl earrings.

Each time, Evelyn had an excuse, but Mark’s trust was eroding.

Lily realized her stepmother was liquidating.

The pressure was mounting, and Evelyn was planning an escape or covering up significant debts.

Lily decided she had to find proof.
