Chapter 3 - Echoes in the Hallway

The weeks that followed were defined by a silent, cold war.

Mark was consumed by a high-stakes merger, his focus almost entirely absent from home life.

His absences were frequent, and when he was home, he was exhausted and preoccupied.

Evelyn exploited this perfectly.

She became a master of subtle, psychological torment.

In public, she was the devoted stepmother.

In private, she was a sadistic warden.

"Lily, why isn't the silver polished?" she would whisper fiercely in the kitchen while Mark was on a conference call in the study.

"Your father works so hard, and you can't even maintain his home properly."

Every task became a test, and every test was designed for Lily to fail.

The physical wound on Lily’s arm was healing, but a scar was forming, a permanent, twisted silver line.

She began to dream of glass shattering.

Every night, she replayed the scene: the falling vase, the explosion, the sharp pain.

In one particularly vivid nightmare, the shards of glass transformed into eyes, all watching her.

The image of her own blood pooling with the petals was burned into her mind.

She became hyper-aware of the sound of Evelyn’s footsteps on the hardwood floors.

The unique cadence, a soft-then-sharp click-clack, paralyzed her.

One afternoon, Lily came home from school early and found Evelyn in her father’s office, shredding documents.

Evelyn stopped, her eyes narrowing.

"What are you doing here, little spy?"

Lily stammered, "I... I just came home."

"Go to your room. And do not mention my presence in this room to anyone."

The air was thick with implied threats.

Evelyn’s control was absolute because it was silent.

Lily had no allies.

Her father was a distant king, and her stepmother was the manipulative queen.

The mansion was not a home; it was a curated set where Lily was forced to play the silent victim.
