Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Lily waited until her father returned from another brief trip.

She found him in his study, looking older, more defeated.

He was staring at his financial reports with a look of pure confusion.

"Dad?"

He jumped, startled. "Yes, Lily?"

"I need to show you something."

"Not now, sweetie. I'm very busy with these audits. It’s... complicated."

"It's about Evelyn. And the missing jewelry."

This got his attention.

He looked at her, his eyes serious for the first time in weeks.

"What do you mean?"

"I saw Grandmother's necklace. In a hidden spot in her closet. And some bank statements."

Mark froze. "What?"

"I went looking for my sweater and I stumbled on it. There’s a secret panel under her mirror."

He stared at her, absorbing the information.

The pieces of the puzzle he’d been struggling with suddenly began to snap into place.

The strange withdrawals, the defensive behavior, the missing items.

It all made sense.

He stood up slowly, his face pale.

"Show me."

Lily led him upstairs.

The house felt impossibly quiet.

When they reached Evelyn’s closet, Mark walked directly to the mirror.

He knelt down and pressed his fingers into the base where Lily had indicated.

The panel popped open.

He pulled out the jewelry, his wife's family heirlooms.

Then, he pulled out the bank statements for Elara Thorne.

His face hardened into an expression Lily had never seen before.

It was the cold, calculating look of a man who had just realized he had been played.

And then the door to the closet opened.
