Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The next few hours were a blur.

Mark called the authorities.

Evelyn was escorted out of the house in handcuffs, a surreal scene that Lily watched from the upstairs window.

The pristine suburban neighborhood, with its manicured lawns and perfect secrets, had a front-row seat to the scandal.

Mark spent the rest of the night on the phone with lawyers, forensic accountants, and police investigators.

He was methodical, focused, and determined to undo the damage.

Lily sat in her room, listening to the murmurs from downstairs.

She felt a complex mixture of relief and exhaustion.

The fear she had lived with for years was gone, replaced by a strange, quiet calm.

But the physical and emotional scars remained.

She walked to her mirror and looked at the silver scar on her left arm.

It was a permanent mark of that initial, violent confrontation.

The sound of breaking glass was no longer a terror, but a reminder.

A reminder of when she had started observing, when she had decided she wouldn't be a victim anymore.

The Taylor dynasty was cracked, but it hadn’t collapsed.

Mark came into her room much later, his eyes red from lack of sleep and stress.

He sat on her bed and just looked at her.

"I’m so sorry, Lily," he said, his voice choking up.

"I was so blind. I should have been there for you."

"I know, Dad."

"I promises I will never let anyone hurt you again."

He looked at her arm, at the scar he had never even seen before.

"What happened there?"

Lily looked at him, and for the first time, she decided to tell the whole story.
