Chapter 2 - THE SHATTERED ILLUSION OF LOVE

The morning sun threw long shadows across the empty ballroom,
revealing the stains of the previous night's drama.
Victoria sat in her private study,
staring blankly at the fireplace.
The crackling logs did little to warm her frozen heart,
which felt heavy like lead.
Clara entered quietly,
carrying a silver tray with hot chamomile tea.
The young maid kept her eyes fixed on the floor,
unsure of her standing after the chaotic event.
Victoria looked up,
her eyes red from a long night without sleep.
"Thank you,
Clara,"
she said softly,
her voice trembling slightly.
"Please,
sit down with me."
Clara looked surprised,
clutching her apron with nervous fingers before taking a seat.
"I owe you my life,"
Victoria continued,
taking a small sip of the warm tea.
"If it weren't for your quick eyes,
I would be in a morgue right now."
Clara sighed deeply,
the tension finally leaving her shoulders.
"I was just doing my job,
Miss Vance,"
she replied quietly.
"But I knew Mr.
Julian was dangerous from the moment he arrived here."
Victoria leaned back in her leather chair,
remembering the sweet promises Julian had whispered.
It was all a calculated lie,
designed to steal the massive Vance fortune.
The police had confirmed that the powder was a rare,
lethal toxin.
It would have caused a sudden cardiac arrest,
leaving no trace behind.
Julian had planned the perfect murder,
almost executing it flawlessly.
"He wanted everything I own,"
Victoria whispered,
a tear escaping down her cheek.
"My family's legacy,
this house,
my wealth."
Clara reached out,
then hesitated,
before speaking with determination.
"He is not alone in this,
Miss Vance."
Victoria froze,
looking directly into the maid's intense gaze.
"What do you mean,
Clara?"
"Before the party,
I heard him speaking to someone on the phone,"
Clara revealed.
"He said the package was delivered,
and the inheritance would be theirs soon."
"Theirs?"
Victoria repeated,
May you like
a chill running down her spine.
"He has an accomplice."
