Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The grand dining hall of the Sterling estate in Long Island, New York, smelled of expensive truffles, vintage Cabernet, and rotting cruelty.

"Clean it up, you pathetic excuse for a wife," Victoria Sterling hissed, her voice dripping with venom.

Chloe knelt on the cold marble floor, her hands trembling.

She had spent three hours preparing a five-course dinner for her mother-in-law’s elite social circle, only for Victoria to intentionally sweep her crystal wine glass off the table.

Red wine splashed across Chloe’s faded, cheap dress, soaking through to her skin.

"I'm sorry, Mother. Let me get a cloth—" Chloe began, her voice barely a whisper.

"Don't call me 'Mother'!" Victoria snarled.

In a sudden, explosive burst of rage, Victoria grabbed the silver gravy boat—still filled with steaming hot liquid—and poured it directly over Chloe’s bare shoulder.

Chloe gasped, a sharp cry of agony escaping her lips as the scalding gravy burned her skin.

Instinctively, she tried to stand up to retreat, but Victoria lunged forward, giving her a violent, vicious shove.

Crash!

Chloe lost her balance, flying backward into a towering, antique Baccarat crystal display.

The table collapsed.

Thousands of dollars of pristine crystal rained down, shattering into a million jagged pieces around her.

A sharp, agonizing pain sliced through Chloe's right palm.

She looked down, her vision blurring.

A massive shard of crystal had sliced deep into her hand, and crimson blood was rapidly pooling onto the white Persian rug.

"My God, look at the mess you've made!"

Chloe looked up, hoping for a shred of humanity from the man standing by the fireplace.

Her husband, Julian Sterling.

The man she had loved, the man she had sacrificed everything for.

Julian didn't move.

He didn't offer a hand.

He simply adjusted his bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo jacket, looking down at his bleeding, burned wife with nothing but pure disgust.

"You are an embarrassment, Chloe," Julian said, his voice ice-cold.

"My mother is right. You’re just a low-class orphan we pulled out of the gutter. You don't belong in this house, and you certainly don't belong in my life. Clean up your blood, pack your trash, and sign the divorce papers. You're done."

Chloe clutched her bleeding hand to her chest, the searing heat of her burned shoulder pulsing in sync with the heartbreak in her chest.

But as she looked at Julian’s cold eyes and Victoria’s triumphant sneer, something shifted inside her.

The submissive, pleading girl died right there on the glass-covered floor.

They thought she was a nobody.

They thought she had nowhere to go.

They had no idea who her father really was.

And they had no idea of the storm that was about to flatten the Sterling empire.

The laughter of the elite guests echoed like demons in her ears.

Every single person in that room looked away, pretending not to see her agony.

Julian turned his back completely, pouring himself another drink.

Victoria laughed, a high-pitched, mocking sound that cemented itself in Chloe's memory.

The pain in her body was nothing compared to the freezing realization of their absolute betrayal.

She stood up slowly, ignoring the glass digging deeper into her bare knees.

She didn't shed another tear.

She walked out of the room, leaving a trail of blood behind her.

The rain outside was torrential, matching the chaos in her soul.

She walked down the long, dark driveway without a jacket.

The gate closed behind her, sealing her past away forever.

She pulled a hidden, waterproof phone from her pocket.

It was a phone she hadn't used in three long years.

She dialed a number she knew by heart.

The phone rang only once before a deep, powerful voice answered.

"My princess, is that you?" the voice asked, trembling with emotion.

"Father," Chloe whispered, her voice hardening like steel.

"Come get me. I'm ready to take back my throne."

The billionaire empire of the Vance family was about to awaken.
