Mom’s property documents were much less dramatic than Michael’s behavior suggested.
No hidden fortune.
No hundred-million-dollar trust.
The house was worth about $610,000.
Mom had retirement accounts totaling roughly $470,000.
Michael had his police pension and separate savings.
They were financially comfortable.
The disputed documents involved:
Adding Michael to the deed.
Financial power of attorney.
Beneficiary changes.
Nothing inherently criminal.
The independent elder-law attorney found one issue Mom disliked.
Michael’s proposed power of attorney allowed broad gifting authority.
Potentially normal.
Potentially risky.
Mom wanted it narrowed.
Michael wanted it signed as written because:
“That is what spouses do.”
The lawyer told Mom:
“You can choose him. You can choose Amanda. You can choose neither. But choose after understanding it.”
Mom chose neither for finances.
She appointed a professional fiduciary as backup and kept primary control herself.
Michael interpreted that as Amanda taking his marriage away.
