Chapter 18 - The main truth

The main truth was not that Michael mistook me for an impostor.

By the time he entered the kitchen, he knew my rank had been verified.

The main truth was not that he wanted to kill me.

He did not fire.

His finger stayed outside the trigger guard during most of Tyler’s video.

He lowered the weapon when the response arrived.

The main truth was about authority.

Michael believed I had come home to take his authority inside the family.

My general officer rank intensified that fear.

For years, he had been the important uniform in the house.

Police chief.

Local parades.

City council meetings.

Community awards.

Mom displayed his photographs.

Then my military career grew.

Colonel.

General.

Pentagon meetings.

Michael began treating my rank like an insult aimed at him.

He mocked it.

Minimized it.

Told Tyler I enjoyed making civilians feel small.

Some of that came from real flaws in me.

Enough came from jealousy.

Then Mom refused to sign financial documents without independent advice.

Michael blamed me.

When Tyler called and said I was in the kitchen on a secure phone, Michael did not see a daughter visiting her mother.

He saw the person he believed was displacing him.

So he chose the arena where he still had immediate dominance.

His police authority.

Weapon.

Handcuffs.

Commands.

He knew I was a general.

He simply believed that inside his house and his town, his badge should matter more.

That was the central truth.

Not mistaken identity.

A contest he invented.
