Chapter 19 - My mother asks the hardest question


Mom asked me:
“Did my pride in you cause this?”
“No.”
Too fast.
She looked at me.
“I bragged.”
“You’re a mother.”
“I compared you.”

When Tyler dropped out of community college the first time, Mom said:
“Your sister was already in ROTC at your age.”
When Michael became chief, she told people:
“Now both my husband and daughter command people.”
At dinner once, she joked:
“Amanda has more stars than Michael has bars.”
Michael laughed.
I did too.
Maybe it hurt him.
That did not make the weapon her fault.
But family culture accumulates.
I told Mom:
“You may have compared us too much.”
She cried.

“But he chose what he did.”
