Chapter 17 - Emma leaves

Mom did not file for divorce immediately.

She moved to my aunt’s house.

Then rented a small furnished apartment.

Michael asked her to come home.

Through counsel.

She refused.

Their marriage had not been physically violent before the kitchen incident, according to Mom.

Michael had never struck her.

Never threatened her with a gun.

But the confrontation changed how she interpreted years of smaller behavior.

Checking her spending.

Speaking for her at appointments.

Calling her confused when she disagreed.

Telling Tyler:

“Your mother gets overwhelmed by paperwork.”

Mom said:

“I thought he was helping.”

Maybe sometimes he was.

Control rarely arrives as pure cruelty.

Sometimes it begins as competence.

Then becomes expectation.

Then entitlement.

Mom needed months to decide whether the marriage could exist without that structure.
