Part 46

Just as the very first light of dawn began to paint the eastern sky in soft shades of pink and gold, the labor room door opened wide.

Ethan stepped out into the hallway, his face completely pale but illuminated by a brilliant, transcendent smile that told us everything we needed to know.

Tears were streaming freely down his cheeks, and his shoulders were shaking with a profound, beautiful relief that left him momentarily breathless.

"It’s a girl," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion so immense it seemed to fill the entire hallway. "She’s here. She’s completely healthy, and Sofia is doing wonderful."

I let out a soft cry of joy, burying my face in Alexander’s chest as his strong arms wrapped around me, his own deep laughter sounding heavy with tears.

We followed Ethan quietly into the warm, dimly lit recovery room, our steps careful and reverent so as not to disturb the peace.

Sofia was propped up against the pillows, looking exhausted but utterly magnificent, her skin glowing with a radiant, maternal beauty.

Cradled tightly against her bare chest was a tiny, perfect bundle wrapped in a soft white blanket, topped with a miniature pink knitted cap.

Sofia looked up as we entered, her eyes shining with a brilliant, tearful triumph as she reached out a hand toward us.

"Come meet her, Mom, Dad," Sofia whispered, her voice filled with a fierce, protective pride that made my breath catch in my throat. "Meet Maya."
