Chapter 22 - GRACEOur third child was born seven weeks after the kitchen.

A girl.

Grace.

Seven pounds even.

Healthy.

Ethan wanted to attend the delivery.

I said no.

Not punishment.

I did not want my labor room to become another test of whether I could relax while he watched me.

He met Grace four hours after birth in a supervised hospital visit arranged through counsel and family.

He held her.

Cried.

Whispered:

“Hi, baby.”

I watched from the bed.

For a moment I saw the man I married.

Then remembered that people are not required to be one thing.

He could love Grace.

Love Mia.

May you like

Love Owen.

And still have betrayed me badly enough that marriage was finished.
