Chapter 26 - THE PHONE COMES HOMETwo years and eleven months after the assault, the old phone was returned after evidence and civil retention requirements ended.

Cracked corner.

Weak battery.

Same black case.

Rachel placed it on my table.

“You want to keep it?”

I thought I did.

For years it represented proof.

Without it, Ethan could have said:

Kelsey defended herself.

Claire attacked first.

I never smiled.

I tried to intervene.

The recording narrowed the lies.

But the authenticated copies existed with counsel.

Court records preserved relevant excerpts.

I did not need the object.

I played the video once.

Not because I doubted.

Because I wanted to see whether it still owned my body.

Kelsey entering.

Ladle.

First strike.

Mia screaming.

Ethan’s smile.

Second swing.

Door exploding open.

Rachel.

Police.

“You smiled while she did it.”

I stopped.

No shaking.

No nausea.

Just sadness.

I erased the local recording after confirming the evidence copy was safely archived.

Then recycled the phone.

Rachel looked almost offended.

“That thing saved your life.”

“No.”

“It helped.”

“Yes.”

“You hate sentimental objects.”

“I kept Dad’s ugly clock.”

“That clock is objectively priceless.”

“It came from Walmart.”

“Emotional priceless.”

We laughed.

I had missed laughing with her about stupid things.
