Chapter 1 - The Cold Ashes of Betrayal

Alessandro Moretti walked into the sprawling,

echoing hallway of his Manhattan estate,

feeling the heavy silence press violently against his chest.

The massive mahogany doors groaned softly as they shut,

sealing him inside a world built on blood,

power,

and endless fortune.

He pulled off his black leather gloves,

tossing them onto the polished marble console table.

His right hand still trembled slightly,

a rare display of physical weakness that he utterly despised.

For twenty years,

no rival mob boss had ever breached his armor,

no assassin had ever drawn his fear,

and no threat had ever shaken his absolute control over the city.

Yet a simple piece of medical stationery had torn his soul apart,

leaving him hollowed out like a burnt-out shell.

He walked up the grand staircase,

his heavy leather shoes echoing against the high ceilings.

He stopped at the end of the second-floor corridor,

standing before the double doors that led to the third-floor suite.

He pushed them open slowly,

stepping into the nursery that had been completed only three days ago.

The walls were painted a soft,

delicate shade of pink,

glowing under the dim afternoon sunlight filtering through the sheer curtains.

In the center of the room stood an handcrafted oak crib,

imported directly from Italy,

draped in fine white silk.

On a small velvet ottoman lay a pair of tiny leather shoes,

no bigger than the palm of his hand.

Everything had been prepared for the child he believed was his heir,

the child he had pledged to protect with his life.

He reached out,

his calloused fingers touching the soft leather of the tiny shoes.

A sudden surge of rage,

pure and unadulterated,

surged through his veins.

He grabbed the oak crib with both hands and slammed it against the wall,

shattering the delicate wood into jagged splinters.

He tore down the silk curtains,

ripped the framed hand-painted art from the walls,

and hurled the small furniture across the room.

The sound of splintering wood and shattering glass echoed through the empty mansion,

a brutal anthem to his ruined dreams.

When the destruction was complete,

Alessandro stood in the center of the ruined room,

breathing heavily,

his knuckles bleeding where the wood had torn his skin.

He did not care about the pain.

The physical wound was nothing compared to the toxic poison flowing through his mind.

Isabella had lied to him for nine months.

She had smiled in his face,

kissed his lips,

and accepted his family heirloom diamond ring while carrying another man's child.

Worst of all,

the medical report had confirmed the biological father was Dante Vance,

the ruthless leader of the rival Brooklyn syndicate.

Isabella had not just betrayed his heart;

she had planted an enemy's bloodline inside the heart of the Moretti dynasty.

Alessandro sank into a leather armchair in his study down the hall,

staring out at the rainy skyline of New York City.

The image of little Emma Rossi flashed in his mind.

Her soft blue eyes,

her innocent smile,

and the warmth of her tiny arms wrapped tightly around his coat.

In the darkest hour of his life,

surrounded by deceit and violence,

a stranger's child had offered him the only genuine comfort he had felt in decades.

He picked up his encrypted phone,

dialing his most trusted lieutenant,

Marco.

"Boss,"

Marco answered instantly,

his voice sharp and alert.

"Find out everything about Sophia Rossi and her daughter,

Emma,"

Alessandro ordered,

his tone cold as ice.

"I want a full background check by midnight,

their address,

their history,

and every detail of their lives."

"Consider it done,

boss,"

Marco replied without hesitation.

"And what about Isabella?"

Alessandro paused,

his eyes narrowing as he looked down at the rain-streaked windowpane.

"Put a twenty-four-hour shadow on her,"

he commanded.

"Do not touch her yet.

May you like

She thinks she can hide behind her family name,

but she will soon learn what happens when you attempt to deceive a Moretti."
