Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The cold rain poured relentlessly over Manhattan,

drumming hard against the thick glass windows of the estate's private study.

Sophia sat on the plush leather sofa,

holding a mug of warm tea,

watching the rain wash down the glass.

It had been two weeks since the gala,

and the city was on the edge of chaos.

Dante Vance's empire was collapsing under the legal and financial pressure Alessandro had unleashed,

leaving Dante desperate,

cornered,

and extremely dangerous.

The heavy oak door of the study opened,

and Alessandro walked in,

looking tired.

He removed his tie,

unbuttoning his top collar as he sat down in the armchair across from her.

"You look exhausted,"

Sophia said gently,

setting her mug down on the wooden coaster.

"Managing a war is exhausting work,"

Alessandro admitted,

leaning his head back against the leather cushion and closing his eyes.

"Dante is losing control of his syndicate.

His lieutenants are deserting him,

and his creditors are demanding their money.

A cornered rat always tries to bite before it dies."

"Are we safe here?"

Sophia asked,

her voice carrying a slight edge of concern.

Alessandro opened his eyes,

looking directly into hers.

"This house is a fortress,

Sophia.

Reinforced steel doors,

bulletproof glass,

and twenty armed guards on the perimeter twenty-four hours a day.

Nothing gets in here unless I allow it."

He paused,

his eyes softening as he observed her.

"How is Emma adjusting to her new routine?"

Sophia smiled softly,

the worry melting away from her face when thinking of her daughter.

"She loves it here.

She spent two hours yesterday drawing a picture of the garden.

She actually drew you in it."

Alessandro raised an eyebrow,

a subtle smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"Did she now?

What did I look like in this masterpiece?"

"She drew you standing under the big oak tree,"

Sophia chuckled warmly.

"Wearing a black suit,

but she added a giant bright yellow smile to your face.

She insists that you smile when no one else is watching."

Alessandro looked away toward the fireplace,

a deep emotion swirling in his eyes.

"She sees things in me that I thought died decades ago,"

he murmured softly.

"And what about you,

Sophia?

What do you see when you look at me?"

The question hung in the air,

heavy and charged with a sudden intimacy that made Sophia's breath catch in her throat.

She looked at his strong jawline,

the sharp intelligence in his eyes,

and the undeniable warmth he hid beneath his fierce exterior.

"I see a man who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders,"

Sophia said softly,

her voice barely above a whisper.

"A man who pretends to be made of stone,

but has a bigger heart than anyone in this city realizes."

Alessandro stared at her,

captivated by her honesty.

He reached out,

his hand hovering near hers for a brief second,

May you like

before the sharp alarm system of the estate suddenly blared through the hallway,

red warning lights flashing across the ceiling.
