Chapter 6 - The Reckoning at the Gala

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of diamond necklaces,
tailored tuxedos,
and flowing silk gowns.
New York's wealthiest elite sipped expensive champagne under towering crystal chandeliers,
oblivious to the brutal underworld wars being waged beneath the city's shiny surface.
Isabella stood near the grand fountain in the center of the room,
wearing an emerald green satin dress that accentuated her figure.
Beside her stood Dante Vance,
a slick,
arrogant man in his late thirties with slicked-back hair and a smug,
victorious smile.
"He won't show up,"
Isabella whispered,
taking a nervous sip of her champagne.
"Alessandro knows the entire city board is siding with us now.
He is too proud to face the humiliation."
"Let him hide in his fortress,"
Dante sneered,
swirling the liquor in his glass.
"Without your family's political connections,
his empire will crumble within six months.
By next year,
I will own every dock and casino in Manhattan."
Suddenly,
the energetic chatter in the ballroom began to die down,
replaced by a sudden,
strained hush that spread across the room like a cold draft.
The massive double doors of the ballroom opened,
and Alessandro Moretti stepped inside.
He moved with effortless grace,
exuding an aura of absolute power and terrifying composure that instantly drew every eye in the room.
He was accompanied only by Marco,
who walked two paces behind him.
Isabella felt her heart leap into her throat as Alessandro's dark eyes swept across the crowd,
landing directly on her and Dante.
Alessandro did not look angry,
bothered,
or defeated.
He looked like an emperor inspecting his domain.
He walked steadily toward the main stage,
where the gala chairman was preparing to make an announcement.
"Mr. Moretti,"
the chairman said,
surprised and slightly flustered.
"We were not expecting you to speak tonight."
"I have a very brief announcement to make,"
Alessandro said smoothly,
taking the microphone into his hand.
The room became so quiet that you could hear a pin drop on the carpet.
"As many of you know,"
Alessandro began,
his deep voice echoing clearly through the speaker system,
"my wedding to Miss Isabella Montgomery was scheduled for this weekend.
However,
due to recent revelations regarding her character,
financial embezzlements,
and unsavory personal choices,
the engagement has been permanently cancelled."
A collective gasp echoed through the elite crowd.
Isabella's face turned completely white,
her hands trembling so violently that her champagne glass nearly slipped from her grip.
"Furthermore,"
Alessandro continued,
his eyes locking onto Dante Vance with lethal precision,
"the Moretti Corporation has acquired ninety percent of the debt held by Vance Enterprises as of four o'clock this afternoon.
Foreclosure proceedings on all Vance properties in Brooklyn will begin tomorrow morning at nine."
Dante's smug smile instantly vanished,
replaced by a look of sheer horror and blind rage.
"You bastard!"
Dante snarled,
taking a aggressive step forward,
but Marco instantly stepped between them,
his hand resting discreetly inside his jacket where his sidearm was concealed.
Alessandro lowered the microphone,
stepping off the stage with calm elegance.
He walked right past Isabella,
not even giving her a single glance,
treating her as if she were nothing more than invisible air.
"This isn't over,
Alessandro!"
Dante yelled out,
his voice cracking with desperation.
Alessandro stopped,
turning his head slightly over his shoulder.
"It was over the moment you touched what was mine,"
May you like
Alessandro replied coldly,
before walking out into the crisp night air.
