Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Garden

Three days had passed since Sophia officially signed the contract as estate manager.
The transition had been astonishingly smooth,
yet filled with a surreal,
unbelievable grandeur.
A private black town car now picked up Emma every morning to drop her off at the prestigious Saint Jude's Academy.
The little girl was glowing with happiness,
thrilled with her new books,
art supplies,
and friendly classmates.
Sophia had spent her days reorganizing the vast mansion,
coordinating with specialized contractors,
and restoring order to the sprawling property.
Yet,
despite the peace inside the estate walls,
the tension in Manhattan was rising like a pressure cooker.
On a cool Thursday evening,
Alessandro entered the private library where Sophia was updating the estate inventory logs.
He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo,
adjusting his silver cuff links.
"You are going out tonight?"
Sophia asked,
looking up from her tablet.
"The annual Metropolitan Charity Gala,"
Alessandro replied,
his tone laced with boredom and cynicism.
"It is a necessary public spectacle where the city's elite pretend to care about the less fortunate.
More importantly,
Isabella and Dante Vance will be attending together.
They believe they have successfully cornered me socially."
"Is it safe for you to go?"
Sophia asked,
a genuine note of worry slipping into her voice.
Alessandro paused,
looking down at her with a subtle,
amused smile playing on his lips.
"Are you worried about me,
Miss Rossi?"
Sophia flushed slightly,
looking down at her paperwork.
"I am simply concerned for my employer's well-being.
It would be inconvenient if you were assassinated."
Alessandro laughed softly,
a rare,
rich sound that filled the grand library and warmed the room.
"I assure you,
Dante Vance does not have the courage to strike at me in a room full of politicians and federal judges,"
he said,
stepping closer to her desk.
"Tonight is about setting the stage.
I am going to strip away everything Isabella thought she gained by betraying me."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box,
placing it gently on her desk.
"What is this?"
Sophia asked,
frowning slightly.
"A gift for Emma,"
Alessandro said softly.
"A gold pendant with her initials engraved on the back.
Inside is a micro-tracking device connected directly to my security team's main console.
If she ever presses the small button on the side,
twenty armed guards will arrive at her location within three minutes."
Sophia opened the box,
looking at the beautifully crafted gold locket.
Tears welled up in her eyes at his overwhelming thoughtfulness.
"You really don't have to do all this,
Alessandro,"
she said,
her voice trembling slightly.
"She is just a little girl who gave you a hug."
Alessandro leaned down slightly,
his dark eyes locking into hers with an intensity that made her breath catch.
"That little hug was the only real thing I have experienced in ten years,
Sophia,"
he whispered softly.
"I protect what is real."
Without another word,
May you like
he turned and walked out of the library,
his dark coat trailing behind him as he headed into the night.
