Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Silence

Sophia stood frozen near the entryway,
her grip tightening on the strap of her supply bag until her knuckles turned white.
"This was not a coincidence,"
she said,
her voice trembling despite her efforts to remain brave.
"You brought me here on purpose."
Alessandro descended the grand marble staircase with slow,
measured steps,
his eyes never leaving her face.
"I do not believe in coincidences,
Miss Rossi,"
he said calmly,
stopping a few feet away from her.
"When I want something done,
I make it happen.
Yesterday,
your daughter showed me a kindness that no one in this city has shown me in twenty years.
She offered me comfort without asking for anything in return."
"She is just a child,"
Sophia replied defensively,
her maternal instincts flaring up like a shield.
"She didn't know who you were,
and frankly,
neither did I until I saw that mark on your neck.
We don't want any trouble,
Mr. Moretti.
We live a simple life."
"I know exactly how you live,"
Alessandro said softly,
pulling a thin manila folder from his inner jacket pocket and setting it on the side table.
"I know your husband passed away four years ago in an industrial accident.
I know you work fourteen hours a day across three different cleaning companies to support your daughter.
I know you just secured a scholarship for her,
but you are struggling to afford the basic requirements."
Sophia felt a mixture of anger and humiliation burn in her chest.
"Did you hire private investigators to dig through my life just because my daughter gave you a hug?"
"I hired investigators to ensure that you were not sent by my enemies,"
Alessandro corrected her firmly,
his eyes flashing with a cold,
sharp intelligence.
"In my world,
vulnerability is fatal.
I had to know if you were real,
or if you were part of a trap."
He stepped closer,
his posture relaxing slightly.
"What I found was a mother fighting relentlessly for her child.
A woman of honor,
discretion,
and untainted integrity.
Things that are extraordinarily rare in Manhattan."
Sophia took a deep breath,
trying to process the weight of his words.
"And why am I here?"
"Because I need someone I can trust to manage this house,"
Alessandro explained,
gesturing to the massive,
empty estate around them.
"My previous staff was compromised by my ex-fiancée's family.
I dismissed every single one of them this morning.
I am offering you the position of head estate manager.
You will oversee the property,
manage the maintenance,
and ensure absolute privacy."
He paused,
reaching into his coat to pull out a leather-bound contract.
"The salary is two hundred thousand dollars a year,
full medical insurance for you and Emma,
and private security transport for your daughter to and from school every day."
Sophia stared at him in utter shock,
her mind struggling to comprehend the astronomical figure.
"That is...
that is more money than I could make in ten years,"
she stammered.
"What is the catch,
Mr. Moretti?
What do you expect from me?"
"Only two things,"
Alessandro said quietly,
his gaze locking onto hers with unbreakable seriousness.
May you like
"Absolute loyalty,
and the permission to ensure your daughter is always safe under my protection."
