Chapter 2 - Shadows Across the Threshold

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds,
casting a pale light over the cobblestone streets of Brooklyn.
Sophia Rossi sat at her kitchen table,
staring at the small white bakery box sitting between two lukewarm cups of coffee.
Her mind was racing,
replay after replay of the bizarre,
terrifying scene in Central Park looping through her thoughts.
She remembered the way the man had looked—his expensive tailored coat,
his imposing stature,
and the raw,
shattering grief in his eyes.
Most of all,
she remembered the tattoo on his neck,
a symbol she had seen long ago in the neighborhood where she grew up.
It was the mark of the Moretti family,
the undisputed kings of the city's underworld.
"Mommy,"
Emma said softly,
tugging on Sophia's apron as she walked into the small kitchen.
"Are we going to buy my new school uniform today?"
Sophia quickly forced a gentle smile,
kneeling down to brush a stray lock of hair from her daughter's forehead.
"Of course we are,
sweetheart,"
she whispered,
kissing Emma's cheek.
"You earned that scholarship,
and you are going to be the smartest girl at Saint Jude's Academy."
"Mr. Alessandro was very sad,
Mommy,"
Emma said thoughtfully,
her eyes wide with childhood empathy.
"Do you think he is okay today?"
Sophia felt a sudden chill run down her spine at the sound of his name.
"He will be fine,
Emma,"
Sophia said carefully,
trying to keep her voice light.
"Grown-ups have complicated problems sometimes,
but you don't need to worry about him."
An hour later,
Sophia's phone chimed with a text message from her cleaning agency manager,
Mrs. Gable.
"Sophia,
an emergency high-paying job came in,"
the message read.
"A private estate in Upper East Side needs a full deep clean immediately.
They are offering triple your normal rate for three days of work.
They specifically requested an experienced,
discrete worker."
Sophia hesitated,
looking at her sparse bank account balance on her phone screen.
With Emma starting private school soon,
the tuition fees,
books,
and uniforms would deplete every penny of her savings.
She couldn't afford to turn down triple pay.
"I'll take it,"
she typed back instantly.
"Send me the address."
By two o'clock that afternoon,
Sophia arrived at the massive iron gates of an grand estate overlooking the park.
She held her cleaning supply bag tightly in her hand,
looking up at the towering stone mansion surrounded by high security walls and cameras.
She pushed the intercom button,
and a moment later,
the heavy iron gates clicked open automatically.
She walked up the winding driveway,
impressed by the immaculate manicured lawns and marble statues.
The front door was opened by an older butler dressed in a crisp black suit.
"Miss Rossi?"
the butler asked politely,
stepping aside to let her in.
"Yes,
good afternoon,"
Sophia replied,
stepping onto the gleaming marble floor of the foyer.
She took three steps inside,
looked up at the sweeping double staircase,
and froze.
Standing at the top of the stairs,
wearing a crisp white shirt with rolled-up sleeves and dark trousers,
was the man from the park.
Alessandro Moretti looked down at her,
his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intense,
unreadable expression.
Sophia's breath caught in her throat as her heart began to hammer against her ribs.
"You..."
she whispered,
taking an instinctive half-step back toward the door.
"Welcome to my home,
Miss Rossi,"
Alessandro said,
his voice smooth,
deep,
May you like
and carrying an undeniable authority.
"I believe we have already met."
