Chapter 4 - A Whisper in the Dark

The contract sat on the polished dining room table between them,

the thick paper gleaming under the crystal chandelier.

Sophia walked slowly around the room,

running her hand along the back of the velvet chairs,

trying to quiet the storm of thoughts inside her head.

Accepting an offer from a mafia don was a dangerous path,

one that could drag her and Emma into a world of violence and crime.

Yet,

refusing him might mean returning to a endless cycle of poverty,

exhaustion,

and constant vulnerability in a dangerous city.

"If I accept this,"

Sophia said,

turning around to face him,

"my daughter's safety comes first.

She is never to be exposed to your business,

your associates,

or any danger.

The moment I feel she is unsafe,

I walk away,

no questions asked."

"Agreed,"

Alessandro said instantly,

without a single moment of hesitation.

"Your daughter will be safer in this city than the President of the United States.

My men will guard her from a distance,

unnoticed,

unobtrusive,

but absolute."

Sophia took a pen from her purse,

walked to the table,

and signed her name on the bottom line.

As she capped the pen,

a heavy knock echoed from the front entryway.

Marco walked briskly into the dining room,

his face dark with tension.

He looked at Sophia,

then leaned down to whisper something into Alessandro's ear.

Alessandro's expression hardened,

turning to stone in a matter of seconds.

"Speak freely,

Marco,"

Alessandro commanded cold-bloodedly.

"Miss Rossi is now part of this household."

Marco nodded quickly,

standing up straight.

"Isabella has gone to Dante Vance's penthouse in Brooklyn.

Our surveillance caught her meeting with Vance's lieutenants an hour ago.

They are planning to file a legal injunction against you,

claiming that you physically threatened her in Central Park yesterday,

and they are using it as a pretense to mobilize Vance's hit squads along our territory borders."

A cold,

terrifying stillness descended upon the room.

Sophia felt her breath hitch,

realizing the true scale of the war brewing beneath the surface of the city.

Alessandro slowly stood up from his chair,

buttoning his suit jacket with calm,

precise movements.

"Isabella thinks she can play chess with me,"

Alessandro said quietly,

his voice dripping with dangerous intent.

"She believes that by striking first,

she can force me into a defensive compromise.

She forgets who built this city."

He turned his gaze toward Marco.

"Call a meeting of the Commission for tonight at midnight.

Inform every caporegime that the engagement is terminated,

and any alliance with the Vance syndicate is officially considered an act of war."

"Understood,

boss,"

Marco said,

turning to leave.

"Wait,"

Alessandro added.

"Assign four of our best men to guard Sophia's apartment building in Brooklyn starting right now.

If anyone from the Vance crew so much as looks at her street,

eliminate them."

Sophia looked at Alessandro,

realizing that despite his terrifying power,

he was actively building a wall of iron around her and her child.

"Thank you,

Alessandro,"

she whispered softly,

using his first name for the very first time.

Alessandro looked back at her,

the icy glare in his eyes softening for a fleeting second.

"You don't need to thank me,

Sophia,"

he said softly.

May you like

"In this house,

we protect our own."
