Chapter 10 - The Prosecutor's Secret

Arthur Sterling sat behind a polished mahogany desk in his sprawling downtown office,
adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he reviewed the final indictment against Daniel Carter.
Outside his window,
the Chicago skyline gleamed under the midday sun,
representing a world of power and prestige that Arthur felt he rightfully belonged to.
His phone rang sharply,
shattering the quiet concentration of his office.
Arthur picked up the receiver with a practiced,
arrogant smirk.
"Sterling speaking,"
he announced smoothly.
"You made a mistake,
Arthur,"
a cold,
distorted voice murmured through the secure line.
Arthur froze,
his smirk vanishing instantly as a chill ran down his spine.
"Who is this?"
he demanded,
standing up from his leather chair.
"You helped my wife hide my daughter,"
Daniel's voice came through,
carrying all the lethal weight of a mafia kingpin speaking from the abyss.
"You used your federal position to bury her relocation files under a false seal."
Arthur swallowed hard,
his hands trembling slightly as he gripped the desk edge.
"Daniel...
you are in maximum security,
you cannot touch me."
"I don't need to touch you,
Arthur,"
Daniel replied calmly,
his voice dripping with icy menace.
"I already have your Swiss bank account numbers,
your offshore shell corporations in Panama,
and the records of the bribes you took from my competitors three years ago."
Arthur turned pale,
his breath catching in his throat as the reality of his exposure hit him like a physical blow.
"How...
how do you know about that?"
"I know everything,
Arthur,"
Daniel whispered.
"And unless you tell me exactly where Claire and my daughter are hiding right now,
those files go straight to the Attorney General's office within the hour."
Arthur panicked,
his professional composure completely disintegrating under the threat of ruin and prison.
"I cannot tell you that!"
Arthur shouted into the phone.
"Claire will destroy me if she finds out I leaked anything!"
"Claire will destroy you anyway once she realizes you are a coward,"
Daniel retorted sharply.
"You have five minutes to give me the address in Maine,
Arthur,
or your entire career ends today."
The line went dead with a sharp click,
May you like

sweat beading on his forehead as he faced the ultimate choice between his cousin's wrath and his own destruction.
