Chapter 4 - The Federal Net Closes

Sirens wailed in the distance,

shattering the eerie quiet of the Wicker Park office,

and growing louder with every passing second.

Red and blue lights flashed against the frosted windows,

casting dancing shadows across the empty bookshelves.

Federal Bureau of Investigation vehicles swarmed the street,

blocking traffic and surrounding the building with tactical precision.

Daniel crumpled the letter in his fist,

his instincts screaming at him to move immediately.

He rushed toward the back exit,

throwing open the heavy metal door,

only to find a wall of armed federal agents waiting in the alleyway.

"Federal agents!

Hands where we can see them!"

shouted a tall man in a tactical vest,

stepping forward with his assault rifle raised.

Daniel froze,

his mind calculating the impossibility of fighting his way through a dozen heavily armed operatives in broad daylight.

"Drop the weapon,

Daniel Carter!"

the agent commanded again,

closing the distance rapidly.

Daniel slowly raised his hands,

letting his concealed firearm slide from his fingers and clatter against the asphalt.

They swarmed him instantly,

forcing him to his knees in the freezing mud,

slamming cuffs onto his wrists with cold indifference.

As they dragged him toward a black transport van,

Daniel caught sight of a figure watching from a silver sedan parked down the block.

Even through tinted windows,

he recognized the silhouette of Claire.

She was sitting calmly inside the car,

looking straight at him with that same haunting,

expressionless gaze she had given him in the penthouse.

The van doors slammed shut,

cutting off his view of the outside world,

and plunging him into darkness.

He had ruled Chicago for twenty years,

yet he had been brought down in a matter of weeks by the woman he had underestimated.

The vehicle moved smoothly through the city streets,

carrying him toward a federal detention facility,

while his mind raced for a way out.

He knew the charges against him were airtight,

supported by terabytes of digital evidence neatly organized in his own secret nursery.

Every illegal contract,

every bribe paid to city officials,

and every smuggled shipment was cataloged under his name.

Claire hadn't just left him;

she had executed a masterclass in premeditated corporate and legal warfare.

As the van came to a halt inside the high-security garage,

Daniel realized his real battle wasn't with the federal government.

His real battle was figuring out how to survive a war against a mother protecting her child.
