Chapter 2 - The Shattered Brotherhood

The silence of the penthouse shattered instantly,
replaced by the violent thud of bodies colliding against the high-tech equipment.
Daniel threw a devastating right hook,
catching Michael square in the jaw,
sending him crashing into a server rack.
Sparks flew as cables disconnected,
monitors flickering and dying one by one,
plunging sections of the room into shadow.
Michael spat blood onto the polished floor,
wiping his mouth with the back of his hand,
before lunging back with a vicious knife drawn from his boot.
"You always underestimated everyone around you,
Daniel,"
Michael hissed,
slashing wildly through the air.
"You thought your money bought loyalty,
but it only bought fear."
Daniel ducked beneath the blade,
slamming his elbow into Michael's ribs with bone-crushing force,
hearing the distinct crack of cartilage.
Michael stumbled,
gasping for air,
his face pale with sudden agony.
Daniel stood over him,
his chest heaving,
his knuckles bruised and bleeding,
as he looked down at his most trusted lieutenant.
"Who else?"
Daniel demanded,
his voice dripping with lethal menace.
"Who else in the organization is working with her?"
Michael let out a harsh,
painful laugh,
blood bubbling at the corner of his lips.
"Everyone,
Daniel,"
Michael whispered,
smiling grimly.
"Every accountant,
every regional manager,
every guard at the warehouse doors.
They all realized that serving a sinking ship is suicide."
Daniel felt a cold numbness wash over him,
the realization hitting him harder than any physical blow.
His entire empire,
built over twenty years of blood and sweat,
had evaporated overnight,
dismantled not by a rival cartel,
but by his pregnant wife and his own loyal men.
"Where is she?"
Daniel snarled,
grabbing Michael by the collar of his suit.
"Tell me where Claire is!"
Michael grabbed Daniel's wrists,
his eyes wide and defiant,
even as death crept into his gaze.
"She is already out of your reach,
boss,"
Michael choked out,
his head falling back against the hardwood floor as unconsciousness took him.
Daniel released his grip,
standing up slowly amidst the wreckage of the secret room,
May you like
realizing he was completely,
utterly alone.
