Chapter 19 - The Final Siege

Night fell over the Cascade Mountains,

pitching the forest into absolute darkness,

broken only by the headlights of two unmarked black SUVs tearing up the gravel driveway.

Daniel stood at the second-story window of his home,

his rifle rested on the sill,

watching the vehicles come to a halt below.

Four armed enforcers stepped out of the vehicles,

spreading out around the perimeter with tactical precision,

their weapons drawn.

Inside the nursery,

Claire held their sleeping daughter safely in a secure interior closet,

her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Downstairs,

the front door splintered into pieces as a shotgun blast blew the hinges clean off.

Enforcers rushed into the living room,

shouting orders in the dark.

Daniel did not wait.

He fired a single warning shot down the wooden stairwell,

shattering the overhead chandelier and plunging the intruders into confusion.

"Listen to me!"

Daniel's voice boomed through the house,

dripping with lethal authority.

"You are hunting ghosts!

The accounts are gone,

the empire is dead,

and if you take one more step up these stairs,

you die in this cabin!"

The intruders hesitated,

whispering frantically among themselves,

unprepared for the sheer psychological dominance of the former kingpin.

Before they could coordinate an assault,

the wail of approaching sirens echoed through the mountain valley.

Judge Vance had kept his promise,

dispatching the Oregon State Police and federal tactical units to intercept the threat.

Red and blue emergency lights flashed through the forest windows,

blinding the intruders and trapping them inside the house.

"Drop your weapons!

Federal agents!"

shouted a megaphone from outside.

Panicked,

May you like

the syndicate enforcers dropped their guns and raised their hands,

realizing they had walked straight into a federal trap.
