Chapter 13 - The Approach
The cold ocean breeze whipped through the pine trees,
carrying the sharp scent of salt and damp earth.
Daniel stepped out of the truck,
his heavy leather boots crunching against the frozen snow,
as he walked silently toward the seaside cottage.
His enforcers spread out around the perimeter,
securing all possible exits and ensuring no one could escape.
Daniel climbed the wooden porch steps,
each movement deliberate and controlled,
embodying the terrifying aura of the mafia kingpin he had always been.
He raised his hand and knocked firmly on the wooden door,
the loud thuds echoing through the quiet morning air.
Inside the cottage,
footsteps paused abruptly.
A moment later,
the front door unlocked with a sharp click and swung open.
Claire stood in the doorway,
holding their newborn daughter wrapped in a pink blanket.
Her face went completely pale,
her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she stared at the man she thought was locked away forever.
"Hello,
Claire,"
Daniel said softly,
a grim smile touching his lips.
Claire instinctively took a step back,
clutching the baby tighter against her chest,
her voice shaking with a mixture of fear and fury.
"How did you find me?"
she whispered,
her eyes darting past him to check the perimeter.
"You forgot that family ties are easy to break when people are afraid,"
Daniel replied,
taking a slow step across the threshold.
"Stay back,
Daniel!"
Claire warned,
her voice rising as she raised her hand defensively.
"Don't you dare come any closer to my daughter."
Daniel stopped just a few feet away from her,
his gaze softening slightly as he looked at the tiny bundle in her arms.
"She is my daughter too,
Claire,"
he said quietly,
his voice devoid of its usual menace.
"And you cannot hide her from me forever."
Claire glared at him,
tears of frustration welling up in her eyes,
refusing to show any weakness.
"I didn't hide her from you,
Daniel,"

she shot back fiercely.
"I hid her from the monster you became."
