Chapter 16 - The Arrival in the Pacific Northwest

Six months had passed since that fateful morning in Maine,
replacing the freezing Atlantic winds with the lush,
evergreen forests of the Pacific Northwest.
A modest,
two-story wooden house sat nestled against the foothills of the Cascade Mountains,
surrounded by towering pine trees and rushing rivers.
Inside the brightly lit kitchen,
Daniel Carter flipped pancakes on the stove,
wearing a simple flannel shirt and jeans instead of his custom Italian suits.
He no longer carried a firearm,
no longer checked his blind spots,
and no longer answered to the title of boss.
Claire walked into the kitchen,
holding their six-month-old daughter,
who was giggling happily and reaching for her father.
"Someone smells breakfast,"
Claire smiled,
her eyes bright and free of the constant anxiety that had haunted her in Chicago.
Daniel turned around,
wiping his hands on a kitchen towel,
and kissed the top of his daughter's head before pressing a tender kiss to Claire's lips.
"Good morning,
my love,"
he murmured,
feeling a profound sense of peace he had never known before.
"The mail carrier just dropped off the local gazette,"
Claire said,
setting the baby down in her high chair.
"Anything interesting?"
Daniel asked,
plating the pancakes.
"Only the weather report,"
she laughed softly,
sitting down at the wooden dining table.
They ate breakfast together in comfortable silence,
surrounded by the tranquil beauty of their new life.
Daniel looked out the window at the towering mountains,
knowing that while his past could never truly be erased,
he had successfully traded his empire for something infinitely more valuable.
He was finally a husband,
May you like
a father,
and a free man.
