Chapter 18 - The Preparation

Daniel returned inside the house,
his face wearing an expression of grim resolve that Claire instantly recognized.
"Who was at the door?"
she asked,
her voice trembling as she held their daughter tight.
"Pack a bag,"
Daniel ordered firmly,
walking over to the floorboards beneath the master bed and prying them open to reveal a hidden compartment.
"Daniel,
tell me what is happening!"
Claire demanded,
stepping forward with panic in her eyes.
"My old syndicate in Chicago is trying to track us down,"
Daniel confessed without hesitation,
pulling a heavy hunting rifle and ammunition boxes from the hidden stash.
"They think you hold the keys to the remaining offshore accounts."
Claire stared at the weapons,
the reality of their old world crashing back into their peaceful sanctuary.
"I thought we had an agreement,
Daniel,"
she said,
her voice cracking with suppressed emotion.
"I thought we left that life behind forever."
"We did,"
Daniel said,
turning to look her in the eye with fierce absolute devotion.
"But they brought the war to our doorstep,
and I will burn down whatever is left of my past before I let anyone lay a finger on you or our daughter."
Claire looked at him,
seeing not the ruthless mafia boss of Chicago,
but a man willing to die to protect his family.
She nodded slowly,
her fear turning into resilient determination.
"What do we do?"
she asked calmly.
"We don't run,"
Daniel replied,
