Chapter 11 - THE CHARGES

Veronica’s criminal case resolved without mythology.
The prosecutor charged her with assault causing injury to Audrey and an elder-abuse-related attempted assault count concerning Eleanor, along with a coercion count supported by the cane, call bell, and relocation pressure.
No attempted murder.
No kidnapping.
No organized-crime enhancement.
No claim the mop was a deadly weapon intended to kill.
The defense had strong arguments about the coercion statute’s scope.
Negotiation mattered.
Veronica eventually pleaded guilty to:
One assault count for the blow that injured Audrey.
One misdemeanor elder-coercion count concerning Eleanor.
The attempted-assault count merged under the agreement.
Sentence:
Short custodial term served largely through home confinement.
Probation.
No contact with Eleanor or Audrey except through later consent and professional channels.
No household-administration role involving older adults.
Anger-management and coercive-control treatment.
Restitution for Audrey’s medical costs not already covered by employment insurance.
No lifetime prison.
No public ruin demanded.
Audrey’s victim statement was one paragraph.
“I was hired to clean a house. I was not hired to decide whether an older woman deserved protection. I stepped in because somebody had to.”
Then Mother.
“You made me wonder whether asking for my cane would make the day worse. I do not want to live like that again.”
Enough.
Then my diversion.
Completed.
Misdemeanor charge dismissed under program terms.
I still paid restitution for Veronica’s medical examination after my slap.
No hypocrisy.
Then marriage.
Veronica moved to a separate apartment.
We began legal separation.
Not immediate divorce.
I needed time.
She did too.
Mother asked nothing.
Good.
Then Bellafonte.
Independent redesign produced three options.
A: Full East Wing conversion after Mother voluntarily relocated.
B: Preserve Mother’s suite permanently, convert remainder.
C: Delay East Wing entirely and renovate hotel first.
Financially:
A strongest.
B viable.
C safest but slower.
No one chose yet.
Mother had not moved.
May you like
No deadline.
That alone changed everything.
