Chapter 13 - VERONICA WITHOUT THE HOUSE
Veronica had built much of her identity around Fiorelli House.
Gala host.
Household authority.
Guest lists.
Staff.
Flowers.
Menus.
Security.
Family seating.
Leaving hurt her more than the criminal sentence, she later admitted.
Not because the house was legally hers.
Because people had obeyed her there.
In her apartment, nobody asked which silver to use.
No one needed approval for dinner.
Silence.
She entered therapy.
Not a redemption shortcut.
Work.
Then she wrote Eleanor a letter.
No request to meet.
She admitted:
Taking the cane.
Disconnecting the call bell.
Locking the dining room.
Packing belongings early.
Swinging the mop.
Using “marriage” as justification for household control.
The last line:
I treated your age as a vacancy notice.
Mother read it.
Then placed it in a drawer.
No response for six months.
Her choice.
Then Audrey.
She returned fully to work after her arm healed.
She eventually left Fiorelli House for a hotel housekeeping supervisor role because she wanted advancement.
Normal career.
I did not create the job.
HR selected her after interview.
Good.
Then she asked to meet Veronica once for restorative mediation.
Why?
“I don’t want to be afraid if I see her in public.”
Fair.
Meeting.
Veronica apologized directly.
“I swung at Eleanor. You took the blow. I am sorry you were hurt because of what I chose.”
Audrey accepted the apology.
No friendship.
No contact.
Enough.
Then my separation.
I stopped wearing my wedding ring after eight months.
Veronica noticed during mediation.
She cried.
So did I later.
Love remained.
Trust did not.
Then I filed for divorce.
No adultery.
No secret mistress.
No revenge.
The marriage ended because coercion had entered our home repeatedly and because I no longer believed living together would be healthy for either of us.
Veronica did not contest.
Property division followed prenup and marital law.
No poverty.
No stripping business.
Veridian remained hers.
She retained investments.
I retained separate family assets.
