Chapter 25 - THE LAST OPEN CASE

Lydia retired.
I accused her of betrayal.
She said:
“You’re sixty-seven. Cope.”
Before leaving, she reviewed the remaining records.
Criminal case closed.
Diversion closed.
Divorce closed.
Bellafonte closed.
Trust modification closed.
Residence review closed.
Retrospective audit closed.
No pending lawsuit.
No hidden family claim.
No mysterious second folder.
Done.
We transferred required records to professional archive.
Destroyed duplicates securely.
No burning.
Then Lydia handed me one page.
The original unsigned Voluntary Senior Residence Transition form.
Mother had never signed it.
“Keep?”
“No.”
Destroyed.
The paper that caused months of conflict turned into shredded fiber.
Nothing magical.
Then I visited Mother.
She was eating pudding.
“Everything done?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Then:
“Veronica coming Friday?”
“Yes.”
“Fine.”
No fear.
No governance.
May you like
No control.
Just an ex-daughter-in-law visiting an old woman who had chosen to allow it.
