Chapter 24 - ELEANOR’S LAST MOVE
At eighty-five, Mother moved from independent Villa Sereno apartment into assisted living within the same campus.
Her choice after two falls and worsening memory.
This time, nobody asked whether moving altered property rights.
It did not.
That issue had been solved years earlier.
No deadline.
No Bellafonte.
No contract.
She toured two units.
Chose the one with a garden view.
Then told me:
“I hate it.”
“You chose it.”
“I reserve the right.”
Good.
Veronica visited occasionally.
Never alone at first.
Then later alone because Mother wanted.
No one asked my permission beyond facility safety rules.
Relationship independent.
Then Mother forgot one afternoon why Veronica and I divorced.
Veronica told her simply:
“We hurt each other and weren’t good married.”
She did not say:
You caused it.
Good.
Then Mother remembered the mop later.
Memory is uneven.
She asked Veronica:
“Did you hit Audrey?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was trying to scare you.”
Mother shook her head.
“Stupid.”
“Yes.”
