Part 12

The next morning, the packing began in earnest.

Sofia stood in the center of the sunlit living room, looking at the stacks of empty cardboard boxes.

The condo was undeniably beautiful, but every single corner of it held a painful ghost.

This was the couch where Carmen had sat while making her veiled threats.

This was the kitchen where Javier had pretended to be a supportive family friend.

Alexander arrived early, wearing casual clothes instead of his usual tailored business suits.

He carried a toolkit and rolled up his sleeves, ready to do the heavy lifting himself.

We spent the entire day wrapping porcelain plates, boxing up books, and stripping the walls bare.

With every item that disappeared into a box, a visible layer of tension seemed to lift from Sofia's shoulders.

By late afternoon, the apartment looked hollow, stripped of the nightmare it had briefly contained.

We sat on the hardwood floor together, eating takeout pizza straight from the box.

There were no expensive dining tables left, no luxury decorations to distract us.

For the first time in fifteen years, Alexander, Sofia, and I laughed together without any underlying bitterness.

"I feel lighter," Sofia whispered, looking around the empty room.

"You are lighter, sweetie," I told her, reaching over to squeeze her hand.

Alexander looked at both of us, his expression softer than I had seen it since before our divorce.

"The real estate agent already has three cash buyers lined up," he said quietly.

"By next week, this place will belong to someone else, and the money will be in your account."

Sofia nodded, a look of pure determination settling onto her young face.

She was no longer the frightened girl who had been cornered by a ruthless family.

She was a survivor, ready to reclaim her narrative and write her own future.

As the sun began to set, casting long golden shadows across the empty room, we knew the first step was complete.

The past was securely packed away, ready to be left behind forever.
