Part 18

A few weeks after the graduation, an unexpected package arrived at my house from the correctional facility.
It was a letter addressed to Sofia, forwarded through the legal team because our home addresses were completely blocked.
The return label bore Javier’s inmate identification number.
My hand trembled slightly as I held the envelope, a sudden wave of old anger washing over me.
I immediately called Alexander, and he drove over to my house within twenty minutes, his face dark with concern.
We sat at the kitchen table, staring at the unopened letter, debating whether we should even show it to Sofia.
"We promised her no more secrets," Alexander pointed out, his voice tight but rational.
"If we hide this, we are acting out of fear. She is strong enough to handle it now."
He was right, as much as my maternal instinct wanted to burn the envelope and pretend it never existed.
We decided to scan the letter and send it to Sofia via email, letting her choose whether or not to read it.
An hour later, Sofia called us back via video chat, her expression calm, collected, and entirely unbothered.
"I read it," she said simply, holding her phone up so we could see her steady gaze.
"He wanted to apologize. He claimed his mother manipulated him into helping her with the extortion scheme."
"He asked for my forgiveness so he could look forward to his eventual parole."
"And what are you going to do?" I asked, holding my breath.
Sofia let out a small, soft laugh, shaking her head.
"Nothing," she replied. "I don't hate him, and I don't forgive him. He is simply a stranger serving time for a crime."
"His remorse is his own burden to carry, not mine. I deleted the email, and I am throwing the memory away."

Seeing her dismiss her former tormentor with such effortless strength was the ultimate realization of her healing.
Carmen and Javier no longer held any power over her mind, her emotions, or her destiny.
