Part 35

Friday afternoon arrived with a crisp, cool autumn breeze that rustled the golden leaves along the city streets.
The four of us sat in the quiet, modern waiting room of the clinic, the atmosphere thick with a beautiful blend of nervousness and intense excitement.
Ethan was practically vibrating with anticipation, his fingers continuously tracing gentle circles on the back of Sofia's hand as they waited to be called.
Alexander sat beside me, his arm wrapped securely around my shoulders, anchoring me to the present moment.
When the nurse finally called Sofia’s name, we all stood up, but Alexander and I instinctively paused, wanting to give the young couple their space.
However, Sofia turned back, reaching her hand out toward us with a soft, pleading smile.
"Please come with us," she said gently. "You both fought so hard to give us a future. You deserve to see the beginning of it."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as Alexander nodded, his grip on my hand tightening as we followed them into the dimly lit examination room.
The doctor was kind and efficient, applying the cool gel to Sofia's stomach while we all held our breath in absolute silence.
For a few agonizing seconds, there was only the quiet hum of the machine, and then, suddenly, a rapid, rhythmic sound filled the room.
Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
It was the loudest, most magnificent sound I had ever heard in my entire life—the strong, steady heartbeat of our grandchild.

Ethan let out a choked sob, burying his face in Sofia's neck as she let out a tearful, breathy laugh, her eyes locked onto the small flickering screen.
Alexander drew me tightly against his side, his own chest heaving with deep emotion as we witnessed the ultimate proof of our victory over the past.
