CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN OPENED

CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN OPENED

Jack froze so suddenly that the blonde woman nearly walked into him.

"What is it?" she asked, slipping her hand around his arm.

He didn't answer.

His eyes remained locked on the screen.

ACCESS CONFIRMED.

SEALED FILE: WALKER HOLDINGS—AUTHORIZED BY MEGAN E. WALKER.

Status: Executive Control Restored.

Below the notification sat a second message.

All contingent agreements involving Jack Walker have been suspended pending legal review.

His breathing became uneven.

No.

That wasn't possible.

He had made sure those documents disappeared years ago.

Hadn't he?

"Megan?"

The blonde frowned.

"Is something wrong?"

Jack immediately locked the screen.

"No. Just... hospital paperwork."

His smile returned, but it looked forced.

Across the terminal, Carol noticed the change.

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

"You look like you've seen a ghost."

Jack laughed too loudly.

"Seriously, Mom. It's nothing."

But his fingers were trembling.

High above them, Megan watched everything through the glass.

Every expression.

Every nervous glance.

Every lie.

Gerald remained on the phone.

"The first package reached him."

"Good."

"The second one goes out in sixty seconds unless you stop it."

Megan never took her eyes off her husband.

"Don't stop."

Another series of keyboard clicks echoed.

"Done."

Jack's phone vibrated again.

This time he didn't want to look.

But he had to.

Board Meeting Notice

Effective immediately, your executive access has been revoked.

Please contact corporate legal before entering company property.

His stomach dropped.

Impossible.

He was Chief Operating Officer.

Nobody could remove him without—

Then he remembered.

There had always been one signature that outranked his.

Megan's.

For ten years he had convinced himself her ownership shares were meaningless.

She never attended meetings.

She never demanded reports.

She let him make every business decision.

Eventually, everyone inside the company forgot one inconvenient fact.

The corporation had never belonged to Jack.

It belonged to Megan.

The blonde looked over.

"What now?"

"Business."

"You said you took care of everything."

"I did."

"Then why do you look terrified?"

Jack forced another smile.

"I'm not terrified."

He was lying.

For the first time in years...

He genuinely was.

Across the terminal, boarding began.

"First Class passengers may now board."

Ashley clapped excitedly.

"Finally!"

The children ran toward the gate.

Carol adjusted her designer handbag.

"Come on, everyone."

Nobody noticed Jack wasn't moving.

Except Megan.

She noticed everything now.

Her own phone buzzed.

Gerald again.

"Phase Two is ready."

She closed her eyes.

For years she had refused to press this button.

Because once she did...

There would be no marriage left to save.

No family left to protect.

Only truth.

She opened her eyes.

"Proceed."

Three thousand miles away...

Inside a sleek downtown law office...

Seven attorneys simultaneously received encrypted instructions.

Initiate divorce filing.

Freeze marital assets authorized under Prenuptial Clause Seven.

Notify forensic accounting division.

Transfer executive authority to Megan Walker immediately.

Within seconds the legal machine began moving.

Exactly as it had been designed years earlier.

Jack's phone rang.

Corporate Counsel.

He answered instantly.

"This is Jack."

The lawyer didn't waste time.

"Mr. Walker... where are you?"

"At the hospital."

There was a long silence.

Then the attorney spoke carefully.

"That's interesting."

Jack felt cold.

"Why?"

"Because airport security cameras just confirmed you're standing inside Terminal C."

Jack's blood turned to ice.

"Wh-what?"

"We also have photographs."

He looked around wildly.

Who had taken pictures?

Who knew?

The lawyer continued.

"Mrs. Walker has activated the emergency governance provisions."

Jack nearly dropped the phone.

"No... she wouldn't..."

"She already has."

Carol walked over.

"Jack?"

He covered the phone.

"What?"

"Boarding."

"I'll be there."

The lawyer's voice hardened.

"If I were you... I wouldn't get on that plane."

Jack swallowed.

"Why not?"

"Because the moment you leave the country..."

"...our insurance carriers, shareholders, and federal investigators will assume you're fleeing."

His legs nearly gave out.

"Investigators?"

"You honestly didn't know?"

Jack couldn't breathe.

Above them...

Megan slowly placed her phone into her purse.

Gerald spoke one final sentence.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"The anonymous package you asked me to hold for ten years..."

"...was delivered to Jack's hotel room in Hawaii thirty minutes ago."

Megan frowned.

"I didn't authorize that."

"You didn't have to."

"Who did?"

Gerald's voice lowered.

"It was scheduled years ago."

"By whom?"

Another pause.

"The only person besides you who knew the whole truth."

Megan's heartbeat quickened.

"Gerald..."

"That package..."

"...was prepared by your father."

Megan stopped breathing.

Her father had died eight years ago.

Yet somehow...

He had anticipated this exact day.

And whatever waited inside that sealed envelope...

Was powerful enough that he had ordered it delivered only if Jack ever betrayed his daughter.

Meanwhile, below in Terminal C...

Jack looked toward the boarding gate...

Then slowly looked upward.

For the first time...

His eyes met Megan's through the glass.

Neither of them moved.

Neither smiled.

One floor apart.

Ten years of lies between them.

May you like

And both finally understood...

The real battle had only just begun.
