CHAPTER 24

Months blurred into a steady,
peaceful rhythm as the seasons changed from autumn to a mild southwestern winter.
Jack's life in New Mexico became a sanctuary of routine,
a quiet existence that allowed him to truly rediscover his humanity.
He became a familiar face in the small community,

known for his quiet dedication and his willingness to help anyone in need.
He spent his weekends volunteering at the local animal shelter,
finding comfort in the unconditional affection of the creatures who knew nothing of his past sins.
One Saturday afternoon,
as he was clearing brush from the shelter's outer fence,
a familiar silver sedan pulled up to the gate.
He stopped working,
wiping the sweat from his brow with the back of his gloved hand,
watching the driver's side door open.
It was Thomas,
Megan's investigator,
wearing a casual jacket instead of his usual sharp corporate attire.
Jack felt a sudden tightening in his chest,
wondering if some lingering ghost from the Walker Holdings scandal had managed to track him down.
"Thomas,"
Jack called out,
walking over to the gate,
unlatching it to let the man inside.
"What brings you all the way out to the desert?"
"Relax,
Jack,"
Thomas said,
holding up his hands with a reassuring smile,

sensing the older man's immediate tension.
"I'm not here on official business;
I was actually delivering some updated security files to a client in Phoenix and decided to take the scenic route."
"And,"
Thomas added,
reaching into his jacket pocket,
"Megan asked me to drop something off if I happened to pass by your town."
He pulled out a small,
leather-bound ledger,
its pages crisp and clean,
entirely blank inside.
Jack took it carefully,
running his fingers over the smooth leather,
puzzled by the gift.
"She told me to tell you that every story needs a new starting page,"
Thomas explained,
watching Jack's expression soften with understanding.
"She said you spent too much time writing in her father's book,
and it's time you wrote your own."
Jack felt a deep warmth bloom within his chest,
a profound sense of liberation that no court judgment or probation release could ever provide.
Megan had not just freed him from legal jeopardy;
she had truly granted him permission to forgive himself.
"Tell her,"
Jack choked out,
his voice thick with sudden emotion,
"tell her that I've already started the first sentence."
Thomas nodded,
giving Jack a respectful pat on the shoulder,
before turning back toward his vehicle.
Jack watched him drive away,
the dust rising from the desert road,
disappearing into the vast blue horizon.
He looked down at the blank ledger,

feeling the infinite potential of the empty pages,
ready to be filled with honesty,
May you like
kindness,
and love.
