CHAPTER 19
Julian Vance's smile vanished,
replaced by a mask of pure rage,
as he realized he had been completely outplayed by a woman he underestimated.
The silence in the room became heavy,
suffocating,
as the guards looked at each other,
uncertain of their next move.
"You think you are clever,
Megan?"
Julian hissed,
his hands gripping the armrests of his chair until his knuckles cracked.
"You destroy me,
you destroy your own company,
you destroy everything your father worked for."
"My father died with regrets,
Julian,"
Megan answered,
her voice clear and steady,
looking at Jack,
whose eyes filled with tears of gratitude.
"He would want me to clean up the mess he made,
not hide behind his lies anymore."
"Lower your weapons,"
Julian ordered his men,
his voice defeated,
knowing the risk of federal exposure was too high to gamble with.
The guards lowered their guns slowly,
stepping back,
allowing Thomas to move forward and cut Jack's ropes.
Jack collapsed forward,
exhausted,
but Lily caught him,
holding him tightly as he wept quietly against her shoulder.
"This isn't over,
Megan,"
Julian warned,
staring at her with venomous hatred,
"laws can be changed,
judges can be bought,
and I will find a way out of this."
"Not this time,"
Megan said,
turning her back on him,
the ultimate gesture of dismissal.
"Thomas,
help Jack to the car."
They walked out of the mansion,
the night air feeling sweeter than ever,
the weight of years of deception finally lifted from their shoulders.
As they reached the vehicle,
the distant sound of police sirens began to echo down the road,
the authorities arriving to finalize the arrest.
Megan looked at Jack,
who was leaning against the car,
looking older but somehow lighter,
free from the burden of his secrets.
"Thank you,"
he whispered to her,
"for saving me,
and for telling Lily the truth."
"I didn't do it for you,
Jack,"
she said softly,
though the sharpness in her voice was gone,
replaced by a quiet understanding.
