CHAPTER 22

Megan stood on the balcony of her hotel room in Santa Fe,

looking out at the adobe architecture and the distant Sangre de Cristo mountains.

The sunset was a brilliant display of crimson and gold,

painting the sky with colors she rarely saw in the concrete jungle of the city.

She had spent the day delivering a keynote speech on corporate ethics in medicine,

a speech that received a standing ovation from hundreds of industry leaders.

Yet,

as she stood alone in the cool evening air,

the applause felt distant,

secondary to the meeting she had scheduled for tonight.

She adjusted her silver necklace,

the one her father had given her for her college graduation,

and took a deep breath.

She had initiated this meeting,

knowing that true closure required facing the ghosts of her past in the light of day.

The restaurant was a quiet,

dimly lit establishment on the edge of the historic plaza,

scented with the aroma of roasting pinon wood.

She was seated at a corner table,

watching the entrance with a calm,

collected demeanor that masked her internal anxiety.

Promptly at seven o'clock,

the door opened,

and Lily walked in,

followed closely by Jack.

Jack looked different;

he had lost weight,

his hair was silvering at the temples,

and he wore a simple linen shirt instead of his bespoke suits.

But it was his eyes that caught her attention;

the hard,

calculating glint was entirely gone,

replaced by a soft,

almost fragile humility.

As they approached the table,

Megan stood up,

offering a polite smile,

breaking the initial tension that threatened to freeze the room.

"Megan,"

Jack said,

his voice low and respectful,

nodding his head slightly.

"Thank you for inviting us."

"Please,

sit down,"

Megan replied,

gesturing to the empty chairs,

looking at Lily,

who smiled encouragingly at both of them.

The dinner began with polite small talk,

focusing on Lily's career and Megan's successful rebuilding of Walker Holdings.

Jack spoke little,

preferring to listen,

his eyes moving between the two women who had defined his life in such different ways.

Finally,

as the main courses were cleared away,

Megan set her glass down,

her expression turning serious but not unkind.

"I didn't just invite you here to make small talk,

Jack,"

she stated,

looking him directly in the eyes.

Jack nodded,

bracing himself for whatever she needed to say,

ready to accept her words without defense.

"I wanted to tell you that the legal investigations are officially closed,"

she revealed,

watching his reaction closely.

"The department of justice has finalized their report,

and because of your full cooperation,

your probation will not be revoked."

May you like

"You are a free man,

Jack."
